ASHEVILLE, N.C. (828newsNOW) — Two longtime Western North Carolina organizations serving people with developmental delays and disabilities are merging in a move leaders say will expand services and strengthen long-term care in the region.

Irene Wortham Center Inc. and Liberty Corner Enterprises Inc. announced that Liberty Corner Enterprises will transition its operations to Irene Wortham Center, combining more than a century of service between the two groups.

The merger is expected to enhance what officials describe as a “lifecycle of care,” providing support from early childhood through adulthood for individuals with disabilities.

Jennifer Waite, who has worked with Liberty Corner Enterprises for more than 22 years and most recently served as executive director, will remain with the organization as transition director to help guide the integration.

Matt Henry, president and CEO of Irene Wortham Center and Irene Wortham Residential Center, will serve as executive director of the combined organization.

“We are grateful to Jennifer for her two decades of service, and we are pleased that she will take the role of transition director to support this new chapter,” Henry said in a statement. “Her commitment to fostering a more inclusive society has changed countless lives, and we are honored to carry that forward as our organizations come together.”

Founded in 1961, Irene Wortham Center provides early childhood education, residential services and adult day programs for individuals with developmental disabilities. Liberty Corner Enterprises, established in 1987, has focused on person-centered care and community inclusion.

Officials said integrating the two organizations will allow them to better meet growing community needs while expanding opportunities for independence and connection among those they serve.
