ASHEVILLE, N.C. (828newsNOW) — With temperatures expected to drop into the teens today and Friday, Asheville city officials are urging residents to take steps to prevent frozen pipes and costly water damage.

In a statement issued Thursday, the Asheville City Government recommended disconnecting and draining garden hoses and installing covers on outdoor faucets. Residents are also advised to keep garage doors closed and open kitchen and bathroom cabinet doors to allow warm air to circulate around plumbing.

Officials said homeowners should locate and know how to operate water shut-off valves in case a pipe bursts. Pipes near exterior walls and in crawl spaces should be wrapped with insulation or heating tape.

The city also recommends maintaining a consistent indoor temperature day and night. While keeping thermostats steady may increase heating costs, officials said it can reduce the risk of frozen or burst pipes, which can lead to expensive repairs and potential displacement from homes.

Residents are encouraged to close windows near water pipes and cover or seal open-air vents to limit cold drafts. During periods of extreme cold, especially when temperatures are not expected to rise above freezing, the city advises setting faucets to a slow drip if other protective measures are not possible.
