ASHEVILLE, N.C. (828newsNOW) — As winter fades and warmer weather approaches, local hardware stores say homeowners across Western North Carolina are beginning to tackle spring home improvement projects — and one of the biggest focuses is lawn repair and yard makeovers.

Early spring is typically one of the busiest times of the year for hardware stores as residents prepare their homes and yards for the growing season. Store staff say grass seed, fertilizer and lawn repair products are already seeing strong demand.

Many homeowners use this time to repair lawns damaged by winter weather, heavy rain or foot traffic. Reseeding bare or thinning areas of grass can help restore lawns before temperatures rise later in the spring.

Experts recommend starting with basic lawn preparation, including raking away dead grass and debris to help seeds make direct contact with the soil. Proper watering and choosing the right type of seed for the region can also improve results.

Home makeovers this time of year often extend beyond the lawn. Hardware stores say customers are also picking up mulch, garden soil, plants and landscaping supplies as they refresh flower beds and outdoor spaces.

Spring projects can also include small home upgrades such as repainting, replacing outdoor fixtures and making minor repairs around the house.

Store employees say getting an early start can help homeowners avoid the rush that typically comes once temperatures warm further and the growing season is fully underway.

With longer days and warmer weather on the horizon, many residents see spring as the perfect opportunity to improve both curb appeal and outdoor living spaces.
