CANTON, N.C. (828newsNOW) — A small earthquake was recorded Sunday near Canton, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The magnitude 1.9 quake occurred at 12:51 p.m. about 2 miles north of West Canton. It was measured at a depth of about 0.1 miles, the agency reported.

No damage or injuries were immediately reported. Earthquakes of this size are typically too small to be felt by most people.

The tremor is the latest in a series of minor earthquakes recorded across the southern Appalachian region in recent days.

A magnitude 1.8 quake was reported April 29 about 7 miles south of Tellico Plains, Tennessee, at a depth of about 4.9 miles. On April 28, a magnitude 2.3 earthquake struck about 2.5 miles north of Pigeon Forge, Tennessee, with a depth of roughly 14.7 miles.

Another smaller quake, measuring magnitude 1.3, was recorded later that same day about 1.9 miles east-southeast of Philadelphia, Tennessee, at a depth of about 6.2 miles.

Small earthquakes are not uncommon in the region, though most cause little to no impact.
