MARS HILL, N.C. (828newsNOW) — The U.S. Forest Service is partnering with the National Forest Foundation to rebuild the Poplar Boat Launch on the Nolichucky River after it was damaged by Tropical Storm Helene, officials said.

The launch in the Pisgah National Forest is a popular access point for river recreation. Construction is expected to begin ithis month, with the site anticipated to reopen in spring 2026.

“We are excited to begin work to rebuild the Poplar Boat Launch, a cherished spot on our forest where folks can recreate and enjoy the outdoors,” Appalachian District Ranger Jennifer Barnhart said in a news release. “These improvements will enhance safety and accessibility for local residents, visitors and the outfitting community.”

Plans for the rebuilt site include improved flood resiliency through the use of native plants, enhanced stormwater retention and permanent erosion control measures. Renderings released by the Forest Service show a redesigned launch area intended to better withstand future flooding.

Once complete, the upgraded site will include a double-vault restroom, a picnic pavilion with electrical access, reconfigured parking for vehicles and trailers, and a dedicated small watercraft ramp and access trail.

The Poplar Boat Launch area has been temporarily reopened for day use only until reconstruction begins. The site is currently unimproved, with no services available. Parking is limited to gravel surfaces, and visitors are advised not to block the road or nearby railroad tracks.

Forest officials urged the public to use caution when visiting the area, noting that hazards may still exist on Forest Service lands and in the Nolichucky River.
