ASHEVILLE, N.C. (828newsNOW) — Drivers traveling westbound on Interstate 40 near Asheville are urged to use caution after reports of a major roadway hazard near Exit 44 that allegedly damaged numerous vehicles earlier this week.

According to posts shared Wednesday in the WNC Road Warriors traffic and road conditions Facebook group, a large hole in the left lane of I-40 westbound near Exit 44 caused multiple vehicles to suffer blown tires.

The post described a “giant hole” with large pieces of concrete protruding from the roadway and warned drivers to remain in the right lane when traveling through the area.

Additional reports from motorists suggested the damage may have been more extensive.

“Avoid 40 west at exit 44. Huge chunks of concrete in the road and about 15 vehicles were damaged,” another person wrote Tuesday. “I got lucky and slipped through there, but barely.”

Officials with the North Carolina Department of Transportation said they are aware of the roadway damage. NCDOT crews repaired the large pothole between 7 and 8 p.m. Tuesday evening after becoming aware of the issue, according to the agency. However, additional smaller potholes have developed in the area, and crews plan to make further repairs tonight, weather permitting.

There was no immediate word on injuries related to the reported tire damage. Traffic delays are possible as drivers slowed or changed lanes to avoid the damaged section of pavement.

Motorists are encouraged to use caution, reduce speed and remain alert while traveling through the area.

Drivers are also encouraged to report potholes or roadway concerns directly to NCDOT through its online maintenance request form.
