ASHEVILLE, N.C. (828newsNOW) — A Buncombe County teenager accused of killing three members of her family is scheduled to be arraigned Monday morning in Buncombe County Superior Court as one of Western North Carolina’s most closely watched homicide cases moves into its next stage.

Star Melody Grant, 16, is scheduled to appear in Courtroom 710 of the Buncombe County Courthouse. Co-defendant Devan O’Neal Loving, 28, is also scheduled to be arraigned Monday.

Grant faces three counts of first-degree murder and one count of felony conspiracy in connection with the May 1 deaths of her father, Travis Eugene Grant; her mother, Kimberly Michelle Grant; and her grandmother, Sharon Harwood Grant. Loving has been indicted on first-degree murder charges.

A Buncombe County grand jury indicted both defendants on June 2, nearly a month after investigators say the three victims were shot and stabbed inside the family’s Fairview home.

The investigation began after concerned relatives requested multiple welfare checks at the home on Ashworth Drive. Buncombe County sheriff’s deputies entered the residence May 7 and found the three victims dead from gunshot wounds. Investigators later alleged in court that each victim had also been stabbed.

Authorities initially reported Star Grant missing before locating her the following day at a hotel in Gatlinburg, Tennessee, with Loving. Both were arrested after waiving extradition and were returned separately to Buncombe County.

Prosecutors have not publicly disclosed a possible motive in the killings.

An arraignment is a court proceeding during which defendants are formally advised of the charges against them and typically enter pleas. It is not a trial, and no evidence is presented to determine guilt or innocence.
