ARDEN, N.C. (828newsNOW) — Dogs will take center stage at Lake Julian Park next month as Dog Day Afternoon returns with an afternoon built around wagging tails and community connection.

The free event, hosted by Mix 96.5, is set for Saturday, May 9, from noon to 3 p.m. at Lake Julian Park. Organizers say the event is designed to be as meaningful and entertaining for people as it is for their pets.

At the heart of the event are rescue organizations that will be on site with adoptable dogs, giving visitors the chance to meet animals in need of forever homes.

The park will be filled with local vendors offering pet products, services and resources, along with food trucks and interactive spaces for attendees to explore.

A fenced off-leash area will provide dedicated spaces for large and small dogs to play and socialize.

Pets of all shapes, sizes and personalities will have their moment in the spotlight with pet contests, including a fan favorite, the pet-and-owner look-alike contest.

New this year is the Dog Day Afternoon “Pawsport,” an interactive experience that adds a layer of exploration to the event. The first 200 attendees can pick up a Pawsport at the Mix 96.5 tent, then visit participating sponsor booths to collect stamps. Completed Pawsports can be turned in for a chance to win a $1,000 grand prize, with the drawing scheduled for 3 p.m.

Organizers say the goal is to create an event that feels both energetic and welcoming, while highlighting the strong connection between the Asheville community and its pets.

“This is one of those days where everything we love about Western North Carolina comes together,” said Shannon Steele, marketing director for Asheville Media Group. “You’ve got dogs, local businesses, rescues doing meaningful work and people just enjoying being outside together. We created Dog Day Afternoon as a space for connection, whether that’s finding a new pet, supporting a local business or just letting your dog have the best day ever.”

A pet photo area will give attendees a chance to capture memories of the day, while sponsor booths will offer opportunities to learn more about services ranging from veterinary care to training and pet-friendly products.

With a mix of competition, community and canine energy, Dog Day Afternoon aims to deliver exactly what its name promises: a lively afternoon where dogs and their people can enjoy the park together.
