ASHEVILLE, N.C. (828newsNOW) — Here’s a look at recent law enforcement updates from Western North Carolina:

Asheville: A man wanted in a recent shooting turned himself in to police, authorities said Thursday. Juan Francisco Martinez Jr., 36, surrendered on charges including assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury, assault by pointing a gun and possession of a firearm by a felon, according to the Asheville Police Department. Martinez was booked into the Buncombe County Detention Facility under a $50,000 secured bond. Police said the case remains under investigation.

Hendersonville: Former Hendersonville Police Chief Larry Hesser, who modernized the department and later served as president of the North Carolina Association of Chiefs of Police, has died. Hesser, who led the department from 1979 to 1987, died Aug. 28 in Texas surrounded by family, the agency said. He was remembered as a transformational leader with a strong commitment to his officers and law enforcement professionalism.

Separately, Hendersonville police said they have closed an investigation into a widely shared social media post claiming a child abduction occurred during the North Carolina Apple Festival. Video evidence showed no abduction or attempt, but that a child left in a stroller unattended for about 10 minutes was moved into the shade by concerned citizens until a parent returned, police said.

Henderson County: Henderson County Emergency Services Director Jimmy Brissie was recognized this week for his actions before, during and after Hurricane Helene. The sheriff’s office called his leadership “extraordinary” and praised his commitment to the community.

McDowell County: A Statesville woman faces felony drug trafficking charges after a traffic stop along Interstate 40. Jessica Agosto Bridges, 43, was arrested Aug. 21 after deputies said they found 40 grams of suspected methamphetamine, fentanyl, Suboxone strips and paraphernalia in her vehicle. She was jailed under a $175,000 secured bond.

Mitchell County: Deputies arrested a Tennessee woman wanted on felony probation violations after she tried to flee through a motel bathroom window, authorities said. Jessica Steele, 34, was captured near the Spruce Pine Inn after briefly eluding deputies. She faces a North Carolina charge of resisting a public officer in addition to the Tennessee probation violation.
