ASHEVILLE, N.C. (828newsNOW) — A crash on Interstate 40 in Buncombe County slowed traffic and pushed drivers onto side roads Tuesday morning, according to state transportation officials.

The North Carolina Department of Transportation said the crash occurred on the eastbound side of I-40 near mile marker 39, about two miles past the Wiggins Road exit in Candler. The shoulder was closed as emergency crews responded.

Officials warned of significant traffic impacts and urged drivers to use caution. The backup also caused heavy congestion on Smokey Park Highway as motorists sought alternate routes.

No injuries were immediately reported.

The interstate reopened about 8:30 a.m., but congestion lingered.
