ASHEVILLE, N.C. (828newsNOW) — Construction is beginning on a multi-year project to replace the Metropolitan Sewerage District’s Carrier Bridge Pump Station along the French Broad River, with river access closures expected during parts of the work.

Temporary cofferdams made of rock and water bladders will extend from the riverbank into the river’s center during in-water construction, which is expected to last about 18 months. The pump station replacement is projected to take 36 months, starting this winter.

The $75.3 million pump station contract was awarded July 16 to Ruby-Collins, Inc., with work on the station and associated piping at French Broad River Park scheduled to begin in early 2026.

Meanwhile, Cleary Construction — awarded a $12.9 million contract for the pipeline river crossing — mobilized at the site and began pre-construction work in late July, including grading, silt fence installation and material delivery. In-water work began Aug. 4 and will require frequent truckloads of rock for a cofferdam to install a new pipeline across the river.

Cleary will build half the new pipeline from the west side of the river before shifting to the east side near Lyman Street to finish the job. Occasional after-hours work may occur, with notice provided on-site and online. The first river crossing is expected to be finished by late 2025.

French Broad River Park is closed to the public during construction, which officials warn is an active and hazardous site. The project also includes rehabilitation of the French Broad Interceptor to handle wastewater flows and protect water quality.

The entire project is scheduled for completion in 2029. MSD is coordinating with the city to align construction with storm damage restoration work at the park following Tropical Storm Helene.

This year’s song of the summer is a ballad, not a banger. Here’s what that says about us

For the past 14 weeks and counting, the top Billboard spot has been held by a love ballad: Alex Warren's "Ordinary." As Berklee College of Music professor and forensic musicologist Joe Bennett notes, the February release is "a fair bit slower than the mean average for the Hot 100, or for a historical song of the summer."
