ASHEVILLE, N.C. (828newsNOW) — Residents across Western North Carolina and parts of northeast Georgia will ring in the new year under breezy but relatively mild conditions, while officials warned of elevated fire danger through Wednesday afternoon.

The National Weather Service office in Greenville-Spartanburg said dry air, low humidity and gusty winds will create heightened fire weather conditions across the western Carolinas and northeast Georgia from late morning through the afternoon. Forecasters urged caution, noting that winds could help fires spread quickly.

EARLIER THIS WEEK: Dry, windy conditions prompt warning on open burning in Asheville area

Temperatures are expected to rise above normal through the remainder of the week. Wednesday will be sunny, with highs near 48 degrees and northwest winds of 5 to 11 mph. Overnight lows will dip to around 29 degrees, though gusty winds could make it feel colder.

New Year’s Day will bring similar conditions, with sunshine and highs near 48 degrees, along with stronger northwest winds and gusts approaching 30 mph. Lows Thursday night are expected to fall into the mid-20s.

A southern-stream low-pressure system could bring rain to the region late Friday into Saturday, with a 50 percent chance of showers during that period. Highs are forecast to reach the mid-50s. Dry and warmer weather is expected to return Sunday through early next week.

The North Carolina Forest Service said fire danger is elevated across most of the state and advised against outdoor burning. Officials warned that dry grasses, leaves and other debris could ignite easily and spread rapidly. Residents are encouraged to contact their local county ranger’s office for guidance before any burning and to follow wildfire prevention practices.
