ASHEVILLE, N.C. (828newsNOW) — Several hundred people gathered in downtown Asheville on Thursday evening to protest U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement following the fatal shooting of a woman in Minnesota by a federal officer.

The “Stop ICE Terror” protest began around 5 p.m. at Pack Square Park before marching through parts of downtown.

Protesters cited the Jan. 7 killing of Renee Nicole Good, a 37-year-old Minneapolis resident who was shot multiple times by a federal officer while sitting in her vehicle. The incident has drawn national attention, with demonstrations reported in cities across the country and footage from Asheville aired by national news outlets.

The Trump administration has defended the shooting, describing it as self-defense. Minnesota officials have disputed the federal account of the incident.

In a statement released ahead of the demonstration, the Rev. Claudia Jiménez of the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Asheville said the gathering was intended to mourn the loss of life and call for accountability.
