AMOS cycles to new exhibit about the science of bikes

ASHEVILLE, N.C. (828newsNOW) — The Asheville Museum of Science will showcase 14 vintage bicycles in a new exhibit all about the physics, engineering and motion of cycling. The exhibit, “Gear Up: The Science of Bikes,” will open with a special adults-only event later this week.

The “Gear Up” event will run from 6-9 p.m., Thursday, March 19 at the downtown museum for patrons ages 21 and up. Highlights include free beer, local cycling leaders and interactive activities.

According to an AMOS press release, “Gear Up” will feature activities like:

  • Complimentary craft beer from DSSOLVR curated alongside the exhibit’s bicycle collection
  • Opportunities to connect with Asheville on Bikes and learn more about local cycling initiatives
  • Meeting the Blue Ridge Dirt Skrrts, Asheville’s all-women biking club, and learning about their upcoming Bike Bash
  • Historical bicycle insights from Buncombe County Special Collections
  • Learning about open-sourced bike repair with The ReCYCLEry
  • Interactive demonstrations with the AMOS Education Team
  • Crafting your own material science spokecard to take home
  • Special DJ set by Asheville FM’s Ecstatic Listening

“Biking is such a vibrant part of Asheville’s culture,” said Amanda Bryant, executive director of AMOS, in the release. “With ‘Gear Up: The Science of Bikes,’ we’re excited to showcase our areas biking community while giving visitors a chance to explore the physics, materials and design that make cycling possible. Bicycles are a perfect example of how science and engineering show up in everyday life.”
