Why is Southside Center the only public pool open in Asheville?

Following Tropical Storm Helene, many of the public pools under the purview of Asheville Parks and Recreation were damaged, with only the Southside Center pool cleared for reopening. However, there are several other pools in the works.

As part of the Azalea Parks and Infrastructure Recovery, a new design for a public pool along Azalea Road will be unveiled this summer, the city of Asheville said in a press release.

“Asheville voters overwhelmingly approved a general obligation (GO) bond referendum allocating up to $20 million for parks and recreation improvements throughout the city including a new outdoor pool in West Asheville with more info on the Malvern Hills Park Improvements project page,” the city continued.

More aquatic fun in Asheville

In addition to the reopened pools, the city of Asheville has planned a long list of aquatic activities for this summer, including trips to Lake Lure, river snorkeling and more. Find a full list here.
