POLK COUNTY, N.C. (828newsNOW) — A magnitude 2.6 earthquake struck near Polk County late Thursday morning, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The quake was recorded at 11:14 a.m. at a depth of about 0.1 miles, making it extremely shallow. Shallow quakes are often felt more strongly than deeper ones because they occur closer to the surface.

USGS officials said the magnitude, location and depth could be revised as additional data is analyzed.
