ASHEVILLE, N.C. (828newsNOW) — The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation confirmed Thursday that one Asheville police officer fired a weapon during a fatal shooting at a Nancy Street home and said the man who was shot was familiar with people inside the residence.
The SBI is investigating the Aug. 27 officer-involved shooting after Asheville police responded around 12:34 a.m. to multiple reports of a breaking and entering in progress.
Additional callers reported hearing yelling and said a man had entered the home, according to Asheville police. Arriving officers saw signs of forced entry at the door and heard sounds of a disturbance inside.
Once inside, officers encountered a man armed with a knife, police said. Officers gave him multiple commands to drop the weapon, but he refused. Officers then opened fire.
The man was provided medical aid at the scene and taken to Mission Hospital, where he died from his injuries.
In an email Friday, SBI Public Information Director Chad Flowers confirmed that one officer discharged a weapon during the incident.
Flowers also said the man who was shot was familiar with the people inside the home. He said he was not aware of any other injuries related to the incident.
The SBI did not provide additional details about the circumstances leading up to the shooting, the man’s identity or whether the officer has been placed on administrative leave.
No officers were injured, according to Asheville police.
The SBI investigation remains ongoing.
